PAPER BEATS PLASTIC?

HOW TO RETHINK ENVIRONMENTAL FOLKLORE

An interesting TED talk!
Most of us want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment. But things aren’t as simple as opting for the paper bag, says sustainability strategist and Indesign Magazine columnist Leyla Acaroglu. A bold call for us to let go of tightly-held green myths and think bigger in order to create systems and products that ease strain on the planet.
Leyla Acaroglu breaks through our deeply entrenched environmental folklore in order to reveal the true impact of the products and materials we use every day. A designer and consultant, Acaroglu encourages both companies and individuals to look at the full life cycle of the things they create and use in order to understand their net effect on the environment. At Eco Innovators, an ecologically-minded Australian design studio, Acaroglu’s team makes award-winning designs and projects that tap into a sense of play in order to educate. From animations explaining the lifecycle of a cell phone to bookshelves made from construction scrap wood to workshops that help rebuild and repurpose broken everyday items, the goal is building savvy, science-based sustainability practices.

Office paper into toilet paper

I wrote about this new machine in 2009  when it was invented in Japan and presented on the Eco products fair in 2009. Now I came across this video via the 1 Million woman campaign

The machine shreds the paper, dissolves it in water, thins it out and then dries it and winds it around a roll. According to Oriental, it costs about 12 cents to churn out one roll.It takes 30 minutes to make one toilet roll using 40 sheets of A4 office paper and water.
Hope they use renewable energy to power the machine.

Clean Up Australia Day is Sunday 2 March

Clean Up Australia Day is a simple way you can take action to clean up, fix up and conserve our prized Australian environment.
In 2013 an estimated 550,300 volunteers removed 16,150 tonnes of rubbish at 7,341 sites right across the country - but we can do better! So lend a hand on Sunday 2 March 2014 and help clean up Australia.

Care about your food!

Check out the WA "Buy West Eat Best" website and
Seasonal food guide Australia

Is the end of locally produced food in sight?
If you've stopped to check a basket of fruit and vegetables at your local supermarket recently, you will find it is like an edible trip around the world.
Oranges come from the United States, garlic from China, mangoes from M
exico and asparagus from Argentina.
Our supermarkets have really become global villages.
But there is a push on to buy locally grown and locally produced food.
