Timothy Kenworthy has been organising this large youth networking event called YOUTH TREE for incredibly similar reasons as Green Drinks.

Youth Tree is a creative collaboration to grow and strengthen relationships between young people, NGOs which involve and empower young people and youth service providers. They envision Youth Tree to contribute to the ongoing development of a more active and aware young population.

So what's the plan?

There will be a few days held early October; day 1 at the Remida Creative Reuse Centre where people create a huge tree sculpture out of re-used industry waste toghether and day 2 in Perth CBD where the general public will be invited to come and make a "leaf" for the tree.

This tree sculpture will become the catalyst for developing the relationships between young people, NGOs and youthservice providers.

Volunteer Staff Positions at Youth Tree

Youth Tree is a youth-run not-for-profit organisation that uses creativity and fun to involve young people in volunteering. We are looking for some seriously switched on people to join our volunteer staff as we strive to make volunteering as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing.

We are looking for passionate, creative, hardworking and friendly people (often more accurately described as "nerds with social skills") aged 16-30 to fill the following positions:

Youth Tree is coming soon!

A while back I already attended you on Tim's project here.

Youth Tree is a creative networking platform aimed at propelling young people into volunteering through their participation in a free two day event on the 14th and 20th of January.

It's looking set to really get more young people inspired, knowledgable, networked and confident, so they can go out into the world and act on issues rather than sitting in front of the TV!

There are still plenty of places available for the first day so please tell anyone, especially youngsters, to have a look.

Day One (14th January), held at the Moores Building, Fremantle, aims to network volunteer organisations and young people through their participation in building a 3 meter high tree sculpture out of industry and household waste.

Day Two (20th January), the tree sculpture will be placed in the middle of Murray Street Mall, where participants from Day One will engage the public by discussing thought-provoking questions about solutions to the worlds problems with them. Responses to the questions will be drawn, painted and written on ‘leaves’ of re-used material as a means of seeding socially oriented thinking in the broader community.

Mr Kenworthy said: “There are a lot of young people out there who feel strongly about the problems facing humanity, and who want to do something about them. But we often feel overwhelmed or don’t know where to start. And then there are all these great organisations tackling those problems right now, and they’re crying out for more volunteers; for more people who care. Why not bring the young people and the organisations together? That’s Youth Tree in a nutshell.”

Youth Tree BIG HELP MOB

Volunteer staff positions are now open at Youth Tree on a brand-new project called Big Help Mob; an army of young people who will perform monthly massive favours for Perth-based non-profits from tree-planting to wall-painting, beach-cleaning and beyond.

Imagine 100 young people from all across Perth coming together regularly to get their hands dirty doing good and celebrating with enormous flash-mobs of ludicrous stupidity. This is a unique opportunity for those who care about youth community involvement to create big change, bring volunteering into the mainstream and help grow an organisation. Together we can create a world where volunteering is as mainstream as cheeseburgers and breathing!

Youth Tree is looking for passionate, creative, hardworking and friendly people (often more accurately described as "nerds with social skills") aged 14-30 to fill the following positions. Each position is for a minimum period of 12 months commencing in November 2009. Positions are on a voluntary basis and will involve an ongoing commitment of 10-15 hours per week.

1pm - 3pm: Gardening Workshop and Hands-on Session
Join us to help expand the Hulbert Street Guerilla Garden
Learn how to :
- make a raised bed from old bits of tin
- create a no dig garden
- make great compost

3pm - 5pm: Cuppas, drinks, chat and fun with the residents of Hulbert Street.

Interview with Muhammad Yunus

I can't possibly recommend this Denton interview with Muhammad Yunus (the dude who invented microcredit and won the 2006 Nobel Peace) highly enough. If you watch nothing else this year, just watch this:) I can guarantee you wont find a better use of 40 minutes..... except maybe cartwheels with Rhinos. Heck yes!

Micro-credits
From one of the world's poorest countries, comes a man with one of the world's richest imaginations, so limitless, that, for him, the idea of consigning poverty to history doesn't seem far-fetched. In Bangladesh, 35 years ago, during a terrible famine, he had a simple idea: lend money to the poorest of the poor then watch as they transform their lives. He founded the world's first "micro-credit" bank - the Grameen Bank, and, in 2006, won the Nobel Peace Prize. He has, literally, changed the world; Muhammad Yunus.
