They are surrounded by big corporations waving with $$$ and pulling the strings. It's like the first video of the Story of Stuff where Annie Leonard explains how things work in the US, where the government is polishing the shoes of big corporations, where instead of 'working' for the people they are ruled by corporations.That's where Australia is now.
How can a government who is paid and chosen by the people work against the people? Why do we accept this?
Why do we let the government spend 12 billion on fighter jets and subsidising fossil fuels and mining industry? While on the other hand they are planning to cut the money for a surplus away from everything we build up to be a good community? Education cuts, cuts on Environment, etc.
