Results of Super Tuesday national bike count

2011 is the fifth consecutive year of the annual Super Tuesday Bike Count. In 2007, the count occurred in four inner metropolitan Melbourne municipalities.

This year the Bicycle Network’s Super Tuesday Bike Count covered 47 municipalities at close to 1100 sites across five states, namely Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia.

I counted on a great spot, along the river opposite UWA, and had almost 300 cyclists passing me between 7-9am during the great bike count in March this year.

The intersection of PSP towards George St, PSP up from the Narrows Bridge, shared path heading towards roundabout and shared path towards Mounts Bay Rd was the busiest commuter route in the Perth municipality, with a total of 1041 riders.

Perth recorded an average of 8.7 riders per minute at the busiest site
which ranked 3rd overall.

Still 4 volunteers wanted for Super Tuesday - 2 March

The Super Tuesday Bicycle Count is taking place next Tuesday.

Volunteers will be stationed around the City of Perth between 7am and 9am counting the number of commuters on bikes. The data collected will be used to develop improved bicycle infrastructure in and around the CBD. If you work in the CBD make sure you ride and get yourself counted on March 2.

Each volunteer will earn $50 for their effort which they can donate to the club, school or community group of their choice. If you would like to help to, please sign up to register now.
The red spots are still open, register now and join me, I am on spot no. 8!

UPDATE 2 March: On my way up to the city along the railway from Claremont I already counted 49 cyclists!
I was on spot 8, corner of Wellington and Barrack street from 7-9am and counted 287 cyclists there!

On Tuesday morning 1 March from 7-9am on a lot of places over Perth CBD, Subiaco, Fremantle, Stirling, Cambridge, Cockburn and Geraldton there are cyclists counting other cyclists.

They are still looking for more volunteers so if you have time please join us! I secured myself a spot along the river near UWA.

It's for a good cause, all over Australia in cities are cyclists counted for a better infrastructure and road safety.

Cycling in Perth

Are you already cycling?
I cycle everywhere and sometimes combine it with public transport, it's ideal, good for my health, waiste line and wallet!

I've just signed up for the yearly Super Tuesday bicycle count which is done Australia wide on Tuesday morning 6 March from 7-9am. I am at the river again, opposite UWA entrance and would be really great to count you in!

Interested in a free movie event, Beauty and the bike, related to cycling come along this Wednesday in South Cottesloe, check it out here.

On the 18th of March Dismantle will be kicking off Bike Week with the opportunity for some good olde' fashioned community involvement & a good olde' fashioned BBQ cook up!
More information on Dismanltle click here

I kicked off Bike Week by my yearly volunteering for Bicycle Network Australia's Super Tuesday 2012. I counted 333 cyclists opposite UWA entrance 1 along the Swan River this morning between 7-9am. That's 45 cyclists more than last year on the same spot!

Counting stuff

Early March I was counting bicycles in the city of Perth and tonight I was counting Black Cockatoos at Graylands reserve.

The Super Tuesday bicycle count went fine, on my way up to the city I already counted 49 cyclists, and that was before 7am! On my spot; corner of Barrack and Wellington Street, I counted 287 cyclists between 7 and 9am.

But the Great Cocky Count was a bit disappointing... I was there a bit after five to settle myself on one of the benches with paper and pen, ready to count. Waiting for the cockatoo call... And waiting... and waiting. I've seen lots of raven, lorikeets, corellas, magpies and spotted several wattle birds and magpie larks, even a ringneck and I heard several kookaburras up in the trees but not one black cockatoos showed up...
So I went home with an empty sheet...
