AUSTRALIANS could dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by giving up prime steak and eating kangaroo, a leading scientist has claimed. The methane gas emitted by belching and flatulent sheep and cows is far more harmful to the environment than the carbon dioxide produced by cars.
Kangaroos have a different digestive system from that of most livestock and produce almost no methane.
Methane emissions from sheep and cattle account for 11 per cent of Australia's carbon footprint.
