RECYCLED waste water is now being pumped into the Gnangara Aquifer after the launch of a groundwater replenishment trial on Tuesday.
During the two-year trial at the Beenyup Wastewater Treatment Plant in Craigie, five megalitres of treated water is being pumped 200m underground into the aquifer.
If the trial is successful, it could be expanded to 35ML a day – or 10 per cent of Perth’s water demand – in 2012.
Water Corporation water source planning manager Nick Turner said gaining the trust of the public would be a challenge.
“The trial is as much about testing community acceptance as it is about testing the technology,” he said.
