AN AUSTRALIAN innovation that improves the efficiency of air travel could save the global aviation industry more than $1.3 billion a year in fuel costs.
Researchers at the University of NSW have borrowed an idea from nature to smooth the airflow over a plane's wing section.
After observing how marine animals such as octopus, squid and jellyfish use suck and blow jets to propel themselves through the water, a team of scientists adapted the principle for aircraft.
They attached rows of synthetic jets to the wings of planes, resulting in a smoother and more efficient ride.
Researcher Nicholas Findanis said the findings had huge implications for aviation.
