Illegal land clearers fined $10,000 each

THE Department of Environment and Conservation is warning people and companies that illegally clearing native vegetation could lead to substantial fines.

The reminder follows two $10,000 fines issued to Garry Meek, a Waroona landowner, and earthmoving contractors Carbone Bros. Pty Ltd after they both pleaded guilty to the unauthorised clearing of native vegetation under section 51C of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

Clearing native vegetation is an offence, unless a permit has been granted, or the clearing is for an exempt purpose.

Some people go even this far to poison trees so they can 'say' they have ocean or river views... how sad. You hear it all the time, this time it's on in South Perth.

My council states:
"While trees on your property are your asset the Town of Claremont requests and appreciates your contribution to the overall greening of the Town by making every effort to preserve trees wherever possible".
But in the mean time they allow residents to cut down beautiful tall trees like the five huge gums along the appartment buildings on Shenton Road near the railway station. Early this year they already had cut some branches off but only 6 months later they cut down all five. I felt like having withnessed a dead penalty and it has been several months now when it happened but every time I walk by it hurts to miss those beautiful trees, especially the one I always hugged...
