Sydneysiders bagged in plastic survey

As the seemingly endless debate over the federal government's carbon pollution reduction scheme continues, Sydney supermarket shoppers appear unenthusiastic about saving the planet.

Rather than take recycled bags along with them to supermarkets, most have groceries stacked in new plastic bags, a joint survey led by the University of Technology, Sydney, has found.

In Newtown and Glebe, 83.2 % of customers walk out of grocery stores with new plastic bags, while only 9.5 % use green bags, the survey found.

Across Australia, shoppers at supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths were the worst offenders.
