The new series II VE Commodore will be capable of running on up to 85 per cent ethanol - a regenerative fuel that can be made from crops or even cornstalks, fruit and vegetable waste.
But West Australians will not be able to take advantage of the new "green" fuel option because of an archaic State regulation.
Holden says when its new Commodore, launched yesterday, is run on E85 it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions about 40 per cent.
Bio-fuel is being made available at selected service stations in the Eastern States and should eventually help reduce Australia's dependence on fossil fuels.
A spokesman for WA Environment Minister Donna Faragher said she was considering advice from the Department of Environment and Conservation, but would not disclose whether that advice was to allow the sale of ethanol in WA.
