Significant changes underway in Australia's timber industry, with a big effort in Tasmania in particular to break down traditional hostilities that have dogged the landscape for decades. The chairman of the Australia's biggest publicly listed timber company, Gunns, John Gay, resigned recently after sustained pressure from institutional investors. He was the driving forcing behind the contentious pulp mill proposal in northern Tasmania. His departure is viewed by many as one signpost on the road to sustainability for the industry and now a new player has emerged in a bid to get green groups and the timber industry working together.
