SWIMMING at popular beaches along the Swan River has been discouraged this weekend after fresh dredging in Fremantle created a huge plume of sediment.
Fremantle Ports has erected signs along the river from North Fremantle to Bicton warning families to be careful because of poor visibility in the water.
Ports spokeswoman Jeanette Murray said tidal movement had shifted sediment upriver from dredging of the inner harbour, but she said the plume posed no health risks.
"There was some dredging being done with the cutter suction dredge at the eastern end of the harbour and that's gone upriver because of the tides at the moment," she said. "The problem is visibility, there is no issue with health and we've had intensive monitoring throughout the dredging program and that's confirmed that."
