Four hours north of Perth on a remote reserve, a team of more than 20 people are setting traps designed to ensnare native animals.
But rather than harm the creatures the team will identify, measure, weigh and record each before releasing them back into the wild.
The team is made up of scientists and volunteers and together they are surveying one of the richest areas of biodiversity on Earth.
It is part of one of 25 biodiversity hot spots worldwide that together contain about half the world's terrestrial biodiversity, yet cover just 2 per cent of the planet.
